Does my bottom look big in this…..? Model Shoot at San Diego Zoo

DSC_0754

Happy Monday…. sorry I could not resist, on our day at San Diego Zoo I desperately tried to get a shot of the Zebras, but alas in the true mantra of never work with children or animals, they were far more interested in their morning snack that me trying to be David Attenborough.  But not to be deterred I think I got a good pic of their bottoms!!!….. No I will never grow up it seems!

Fortunately a few of the other animals at the Zoo were a little more forthcoming!

Eddie the Elephant did their hair specially for me, the straw look… The meerkat misplaced her bikini for the shoot so maintained a little modesty.

La Jolla – A relaxing start, dispelling myths and meeting new friends

IMG_0608

One of the first stops on the journey was a quaint and beautiful little town in San Diego called La Jolla (pronounced La Hoya) yes I pronounced it like it was a little Jolly! – Apologies for all those that I offended! Although I did manage to get my own back when I was asked to throw another shrimp on the BBQ….. Much to my friends dismay I had to dispel the myth that Aussies call prawns “shrimps”….. Mr Paul Hogan was scripted purely for the American market I am afraid….. anyway I digress.

For those of you who love a quaint little town ,with an abundance of wild life then this is a must stop for you, where you are guaranteed to bump in to the odd seal lapping up the afternoon sun on the beach or peruse around The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

I am not really a travel writer, but love to take pictures so forgive me if I just stop with the words and give you the pictures!

Introducing my new friend Sammy!

Stumble upon – “Perish Trust” San Francisco

IMG_0811

On a windy San Francisco day I decided to explore a little bit out of the central city and stumbled upon Divisadero St and a little gem called “The Perish Trust”.  I am a sucker for curiosity and nick nacs, especially when they are displayed in such a gorgeous way.  So out came the camera for me to share with you…. Unfortunately excess baggage did not allow me to partake as I had already bout too many shoes and jeans at this point… but I am wishing I had bought those little moccasin’s now!

“Our mission is to diligently collect and curate antiques from the dead and dying industries. Perusing basements, boxes and personal stashes for the odd, obsolete and unusual. Hand picking artists from coast to coast to collaborate and showcasing it all in our gussied up little bunker.”

Distorting the Masters – An Interior Collaboration

Cushions_Web

I am feeling a little bit like a stalker at the moment of the British designers Young and Battaglia.  I recently posted on their faux cowhide rugs which I love, they have now taken this to a new dimension, working together with American conceptual artist and designer Chad Wys, to create their classics revisited collection.

statement1

The collection includes the Pastoral cow hide rug (Below), which is taken from Chad’s “American Tapestry” collection, and a series of cushions which take inspiration from Chad’s “Nocturnes” Portfolio collection.

I love how the artist and designers have taken something from the past and bought it into the present, or is it perhaps taking the present into the past?  Let me know your thoughts.

Below are Chad’s prints followed by the Cushions with the Y&B touch…. oh and a little bit of influence from Cluedo me thinks…….

Brittany Watson Jepsen – “Creative mess is better than tidy idleness”

100LC_flowerwedding2

When asked what she always bought home from her travels, the answer was an illustrated children’s book.  And where would she most like to travel… Vienna to dress up in full costume and take part in “The Sound of Music Singalong Tour”.  With answers like that it is easy to see where the whimsical comes in to Californian designer and blogger, Brittany Watson Jepson’s, creations. I also love her mums favourite quote…”a creative mess is better than tidy idleness”….. I must try that one when the dining room table looks like an explosion in a fabric factory.

brittany_watson_jepsen

Taking these words of wisdom literally, Brittany has spent childhood through to adulthood creating artwork and music, designing for Tiffany and Co, writing for Design Sponge and indeed her own blog “The house that Lars Built” to name but a few.

In amongst all of this Brittany has a way with paper which I just love, and I have fallen in love with the oversized paper flowers which are the perfect way to add a little whimsy and colour to a room.

…Loving her display at a Danish Embassy function……. how good would this look for a wedding.

These flower creations first came about after Brittany had one as her bouquet at her own wedding (See header photo).

And for those of you who love to make a “creative mess and leave behind your tidy idleness” (I can see I am going to get a lot of use out of this quote), then you should look no further that Brittany’s fun little DIY projects such as making a snow dome cake topper, or a Bouquet with a little difference… who says baubles are just for christmas!!!!

Iron Lady – Cal Lane

Cal_Lane_Plasma_cut_shovels

You would be right in thinking that there is a little bit of a theme this week, with Lace being the dominating topic.  As I was searching for inspiration for Wednesdays post I stumbled upon the amazing work of hairdresser turned sculptress Cal Lane.

Source Phil Mansfield NYT

Source Phil Mansfield New York Times

Lane’s mother owned a hairdressing Salon, and as a result of one of the staff saying she did not have what it takes to become a hairdresser, she took this as a challenge and set to prove them wrong… which whilst she did…. it was never her serious vocation.

Born on Vancouver Island, Lane studied art and welding at several schools in Canada, before she made her home on a sprawling, former farm in upstate New York. The property is owned by noted modern-and-contemporary art collectors David and Diane Waldman, who reside in Rancho Mirage, California, and allowed Lane to stay free of charge unique artist-patron relationship. They display a wheelbarrow donated by Lane in their home.

Whilst her work has become more political in recent years, I just love the work that she has done taking everyday industrial objects and injecting a beauty into them with the lace effects of a steady hand and a cutting tool….
