Casting Nature – Hilla Shamia

16

Israel based product designer Hilla Shamia has created this stunning furniture by combining cast aluminum and burnt wood. Bringing in the traditional of the wood and the industrial feel of the metal….. it would be really interesting to see these with the aluminum being traded for concrete (although probably a very heavy option!), or other metals.

Sari Style – The Upcycle Way

ELTE booth IDS 2012

The season of interior trade fairs has hit Sydney with a vengeance, and ever eager that my achy feet will find a couple of gems upon my travels between the cushions and the curtains, this year I stumbled upon the ultimate in upcycling.  To be honest I hate the idea of waste and love it when something is repurposed, but it isn’t very often the word upcycle and beauty fall into the same sentence.  That is until I saw these fab rugs which have been made from recycled sari silks, often producing really interesting and colourful results.

The rugs, which are made by artisans in India, are created from recycled sari silk.  The saris are unravelled by hand and then reborn as they are woven into new, colourful and interesting patterns.  The hand made quality makes each one unique….. they are also incredibly soft so if you can bear to have them on the floor ( as opposed to the wall) they would make a very cosy spot to cuddle up with a book and a cuppa……

Treasure Trove of Wallpaper

Trove-wallpaper2

With a client base including Nobu Restaurants’ private dining rooms, Club Monaco, Fairmont Hotels, W Hotels, McCann Erickson, Suffolk University and celebrity residence, New York based Trove, led by creative design duo Jee Levin and Randall Buck, have obviously got some thing right with the formula of their wallpaper and window covering creations through their company Trove.

Inspired by New York City’s 100-year-old flower market in the middle of Manhattan, with later inspirations looking at the natural elements. Levin and Buck’s work is a fantastic interpretation of the uncomplicated, yet fascinating beauty of our surrounding natural environment….. There are also a few quirky takes of Queen victoria and historical buildings added in amongst their portfolio.

With Trove’s designs pushing the limits of scale and repeats with unique patterns that are 12 feet high and 3 to 6 feet across, there is something for all scale of rooms.

Rocking the Pantone Roll – When Music Meets Colour

pantonrollCHICARTISTICsite8

Those in the design world would be pretty familiar with the recognised system for matching colours, predominantly in the world of print. A Paris based creative force “Chic & Artistic” have used the famous system to mix with the musical palette to come up with some simple but statement pieces.

pantonrollCHICARTISTICsite5

Entitled Panto’N’Roll, the creative team have used swatches in place of wording on classic songs like Brown Sugar and Yellow Submarine.  They are also producing a set of posters, and to quote the creative team….” if you want to be in the loop, please send us an email with the title(s) you like, pantonroll@chic-artistic.com”

Flag Lighting – Moya Delany Style

Source Design Files

Moya and her Nato shades – Source Design Files

Melbourne based artist, designer and creator Moya Delany certainly has a very creative eye, and her background is just as colourful and diverse as her creations.  From a student of fine art, through to jewellery and accessory design which saw her in top fashion magazines in the UK, US and Australia… you know Vogue, Harpers Bizarre, Elle….. pretty impressive.

She also had a chance encounter with Debbie Harry ( Blondie) and a NY fashion buyer which got her style noticed by some equally high profile stockists such as Barneys no less.  Moya’s website is well worth a look as is a recent interview on Design Files with Lucy Feagins, which talks about her dream to design Richard Branson’s galactic space lounge…..now there is a dream.  ( I am quite happy to make the sandwiches if you succeed and need a caterer!!)

Whilst Moya still dabbles in her costume jewellery, I am loving her new focus which is creating architectural objects for interiors and custom lighting, especially her oversized NATO lampshades which are made from vintage NATO and US flags….Some of the flags date back to 1895…. so a real vintage repurpose.  The shades are available through Melbourne store Safari Living.
